How to Create a Hytale Server Guide
This guide covers everything you need to know about creating a Hytale server, whether you want to rent from a hosting provider or set up your own dedicated machine.
Option 1: Rent a Hytale Server (Recommended)
The easiest way to get a Hytale server up and running is to rent from a game server hosting provider. This option is recommended for most players as it requires no technical knowledge and provides reliable performance.
Benefits of Renting
- Custom Control Panel: Easy-to-use interface to start, stop, restart your server, edit configs, and manage backups
- Dedicated Hardware: High-performance servers optimized for gaming
- NVMe SSD Storage: Fast load times and world generation
- DDoS Protection: Keep your server safe from attacks
- Worldwide Locations: Choose a server location close to your players for low latency
- 24/7 Support: Get help when you need it

Option 2: Self-Host a Hytale Server
If you prefer to run your own server hardware, you can self-host a Hytale server. This option gives you full control but requires technical knowledge and a capable machine.
System Requirements
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 4 GB | 6-8 GB |
| CPU | Modern 64-bit processor | Quad-core or better |
| Storage | 10 GB free space | 20+ GB SSD |
| OS | Windows 10/11 or 64-bit Linux | |
| Java | Java 25 (required) | |
Step 1: Obtain Server Files
You can get the Hytale server files in two ways:
- Game Installation Folder: If you own Hytale, the server files are included in your game installation directory
- Hytale Downloader Tool: Use the official Hytale Downloader tool to download the latest server files
Step 2: Launch the Server
Open a command prompt or terminal and navigate to your server folder. Run the following command to start the server:
java -jar Server\HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip
The server will initialize and create the necessary configuration files on first run.
Step 3: Authenticate Your Server
After the server starts, you need to authenticate it with your Hytale account:
- In the server console, type:
/auth login device - Follow the prompts to link to your Hytale account
- Complete the authentication in your browser
Step 4: Configure Port Forwarding
Important: Hytale uses UDP port 5520 by default. This is different from many other games that use TCP.
To allow players outside your network to connect:
- Access your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
- Find the Port Forwarding section
- Create a new rule:
- Port: 5520
- Protocol: UDP
- Internal IP: Your server machine's local IP address
- Save and apply the changes
Step 5: Allocate RAM
For better performance, allocate more RAM to your server using Java flags. Modify your startup command:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar Server\HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip
This allocates 4GB of RAM. Adjust the numbers based on your available memory (e.g., -Xms6G -Xmx6G for 6GB).
Server Configuration
After your server is running, you can customize it by editing the configuration files:
Important Files
- config.json: Main server configuration (server name, max players, etc.)
- server.json: Network and authentication settings
Important Folders
- universe/: World data and saves
- mods/: Server-side mods and plugins
- logs/: Server log files for troubleshooting
